across the net inside Ashe Stadium.
If that is a bit disrespectful toward Caroline Wozniacki, it is not necessarily meant to be. Wozniacki played well over two fine weeks in Flushing Meadows, earning the right to be outclassed and pulverized by the one player on the women’s tour who can only lose to herself — and often does.
Not this time, though. Williams ripped 29 winners, compared to just four for the Danish star, who rarely stepped inside the delineated boundaries of the tennis court. Williams dominated so completely, chasing Wozniacki with her groundies to the Unisphere and back over 75 minutes, that the crowd gave Wozniacki what amounted to a pity ovation after one futile, lengthy rally in the final game.
Wozniacki scrambled, pursued and finally, inevitably lost that point.
“It’s almost not a fair fight, a heavyweight versus a middleweight,” said Martina Navratilova, standing in an Ashe corridor after the match. “Serena can play 80%, within her comfort zone, and that’s still too much.”
